How competitive is the Legal 500 Germany ranking?

The Legal 500 Germany 2026 guide illustrates how competitive the German legal market has become. The latest edition covers 89 practice areas and includes 437 ranked law firms across Germany.

In total, the research resulted in 2,410 practice rankings and 978 individual lawyer recognitions.

For the 2026 edition, the research team reviewed 1,478 submissions from law firms operating in Germany. Each submission is evaluated based on representative matters, client references and independent market feedback.

By comparison, the previous edition of Legal 500 Germany included around 420 ranked law firms and slightly fewer individual lawyer recognitions. The increase in the number of ranked firms and submissions indicates growing competition among law firms seeking visibility in international legal directories.

This is particularly notable given the size of the German legal market. According to the Bundesrechtsanwaltskammer, Germany has over 165,000 registered lawyers and several thousand law firms. Against this background, only a relatively small share of firms ultimately receives rankings in international directories.

For many firms, rankings such as Legal 500, Chambers and IFLR have become an important element of their international business development strategy, helping to build credibility with corporate clients and cross-border investors.
